Xiaomi has now brought the “Mi Mix” series back to life with a foldable smartphone. The previous iteration saw the release of the first Mi Mix Alpha, which was not a huge hit and was characterized by Xiaomi as a concept smartphone. As a successor and latest version of the “Mix” series, Xiaomi officially launched the Mi MIX FOLD, the first foldable smartphone, at the Spring 2021 New Product Launch, which previously revealed the Mi 11 Pro and the Mi 11 Ultra.
In contrast to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold Series and Huawei’s Mate X2, Xiaomi’s latest Mi Mix Fold smartphone also uses inward folding style. It has a wide 8.01-inch WQHD+ resolution flexible internal display with a standard display brightness of 600 nits (900 peak) and Dolby Vision HDR support. The external display is 6.52” and has a refresh rate of 90Hz.
External and internal displays from Mi MIX FOLD can generate images and video in super-resolution using Xiaomi’s own AI algorithm and can also double the resolution of images from 720p to 1440p. The AI algorithm triples the resolution of video, boosting it from 480p to 1440p.
The latest Mi MIX FOLD features a U-shaped hinge that reduces weight and improves durability. When opposed to other foldables, Xiaomi says that the weight is decreased by up to 27%. The device has an ultra-large 4:3 aspect ratio, which Xiaomi says as the world’s largest foldable smartphone, although Huawei may disagrees with this.
The Mi MIX FOLD’s sound system was further improved by Xiaomi’s by using the world’s first smartphone quad speaker configuration. The speakers are symmetrically located on either side of the screen with a large 0.65mm amplitude and a sound cavity of 1.34cc. Furthermore, Xiaomi claims that Mi Mix Fold Sound by Harman Kardon tuned speakers improve sound loudness by up to 40%.
The large panel on the Mi MIX FOLD supports a variety of useful work features, including split screen, multi-screen drag and drop, parallel windows, Desktop mode, AI meeting assistant, and more. The device also allows multi-window, allowing you to simultaneously view up to four videos in separate windows on the screen.
As per Xiaomi, in reliability tests, the system was bent 200,000 times, and in extreme reliability testing, it was bent up to 1 million times.
The major highlight of the device is the Liquid Lens technology used in the telephoto camera. Mi Mix Fold uses a primary sensor of 108MP, which sits behind a 7P lens. The liquid lens, according to Xiaomi, is based on the concept of human eye bionics, creating a lens-like shape with a translucent fluid covered in film, which is very different from conventional optical lenses. The spherical surface curvature radius can be precisely modified, allowing for 3X optical zoom, up to 30X telephoto and a minimum focus distance of 3cm. This means one lens can function as two lenses. Aside from the main sensor, the device has a 13MP ultra-wide angle camera with a 123° field of view.
The Snapdragon 888 chipset drives the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold, which is combined with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. There are three memory configurations available: 12/256 GB, 12/512 GB, and 16/512 GB.
The Mi MIX FOLD has a built-in 5,020mAh battery with dual-battery parallel architecture, and consists of two 2,460mAh and 2,560mAh batteries. Furthermore, the Mi MIX FOLD facilitates 67W rapid charging, allowing the handset to be fully charged in just 37 minutes. The handset also features CNT battery technology, which supports safer and faster charging while also extending the battery’s lifetime.
The “butterfly-type” cooling system, which consists of a large vapor chamber, thermal gel, and several layers of graphite sheets, guarantees high efficiency. The Fold has a gross heat dissipation region of 22,583 mm² in total. The cooling mechanism isn’t solely for the chipset; it also eliminates heat from the 5G antennas and the fast charging system.
