On Wednesday, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates announces that it has become the first airline in the world to vaccinate 100% of its onboard crews- Pilots and Cabin Crew. The airline also assures that 75% of its employees have already taken the Covid-19 vaccinations.
Etihad Airways achieves this milestone with the help of its medical center that is turned into Vaccination clinics. The airline named the campaign to vaccinate all of its employees “Protected Together” and started it in January of this year.
Dr. Nadia Bastaki, Vice President Medical Services, and CSR, Etihad Aviation Group, said: “Following the national vaccination program, we worked tirelessly to become an approved COVID-19 vaccination clinic to support our staff, and their dependents, be able to easily access the vaccine. Since December 2020, we have been offering in-house vaccination appointments to our employees and their loved ones to ensure we are focused on our employee’s wellbeing.”
Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Tony Douglas said “We proactively made the vaccine available to all our employees to not only help combat the effects of COVID-19 but to make travelers feel confident and reassured the next time they fly with us. We are the only airline in the world to make COVID-19 testing mandatory for every passenger and crew member before every flight and now, we’re the first airline in the world with 100% vaccinated crew on board.”
He also mentioned that he chose early to be vaccinated so that it could encourage everyone in the Etihad to get a vaccine as soon as possible and support the national program. He also thanks to everyone in the Etihad family for reaching the milestone.
“I would like to thank the entire Etihad family for everything they have done to help us reach this milestone – I am truly humbled,” says Tony.
Besides, becoming the first airline to vaccinate 100% of its onboard crews, Etihad also received another award this year. As per SimpliFlying audits, Etihad was awarded Diamond Status in January. The award is simply achieved for ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness and sanitation in the inaugural ‘APEX Health Safety’. In addition to that, Etihad Airways and Emirates are the first airlines to trial the International Air Transport Association (IATA)’s Travel Pass. The travel pass ensured if the passengers were vaccinated or not for the safety of both airlines and passengers.
The UAE-based airline seems to be ahead of the nationwide Covid vaccination program currently. While UAE plans to vaccinate half of its population by the end of March, Etihad already claims that 75% of the workforce has already taken the first dose of Covid-19 vaccines. The organization started vaccinating service in December 2020.
The Airlines medical center was working with the UAE’s health authorities and they made sure that the front line warriors had easy access to vaccines. Since December, Etihad’s medical center has been operating as Covid -19 vaccination center.
Now Etihad Airways accepts vaccinated passengers only and uses vaccinated crews on board as well. This keeps the safety between both passengers and airline crews. As the world was restricted from boundaries, we can hope that with Covid-19 vaccines the airline industry will soon return back to its glory.
