Etihad Airways and Emirates become the first Airlines to trail the IATA’s (International Air Transport Association) Travel Pass globally and in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The new Travel Pass lets the user record their travel destinations and upload their digital certificate of Covid-19 test result or any kind of vaccination records to ensure that they are safe and can visit other countries.
The use and acceptance of Travel Pass in these giant airlines of the Middle East will welcome many travelers onboard. Customers can save time by sharing their vaccination report with the airlines and avoid traffic checks and delays in the airport. This can attract many travelers to fly from their network, which decreases the financial burden on both airlines caused by halting their aircraft on the ground because of Covid-19.
Etihad assures its passengers that, they can use the digital health passport in the first quarter of 2021. Although the first trial of Travel Pass will be used from Abu Dhabi, if everything goes right, the airline will extend the use of Travel Pass to other destinations in Etihad networks.
Mohammad Al Bulooki, a Chief Operating Officer at Etihad Aviation Group confirms that “A high priority for Etihad is for our guests to have an easy, secure and efficient way to identify and verify their information”.
On other hand, Emirates will also trail the Travel Pass in Dubai before expanding it across the global networks. Emirates has given this trail a name called “Phase 1”. This phase is believed to start from April where it will give the passengers the advantage of uploading Covid-19 test results before reaching the airport. This can save time and make the journey hassle-free for passengers.
Adel Al Redha, a Chief Operating Officer at Emirates also confirms that “While international travel remains as safe as ever, there are new protocols and travel requirements with the current global pandemic. We have worked with IATA on this innovative solution to simplify and digitally transmit the information that is required by countries and governments into our airline systems, in a secure and efficient manner. We are proud to be one of the first airlines in the world to pilot this initiative, which will provide an enhanced customer experience and conveniently facilitate our customers’ travel needs”.
What is a Travel Pass and how it helps to travel?
Travel Pass is a mobile application developed by International Air Transport Association (IATA) that allows passengers traveling from one nation to another to store their verified certificates for COVID-19 tests or vaccinations related to COVID-19.
IATA prioritizes making a digital health passport so that the Government can open their borders to other countries as well without having to worry about quarantine rules and regulations. IATA’s Travel Pass integrates with laboratories for the test result and vaccination. This will help to eliminate the big risk for Government, Airlines, and passengers themselves.
Through Travel Pass, IATA makes sure that there are not any privacy violations of the applications. The android and ios version of Travel Pass will be available within the first quarter of 2021.
In assistance for Health Measures, Nick Karen the Senior Vice President for Airport, Passenger, Cargo, and Security, at IATA says “This is the first step in making international travel during the pandemic as convenient as possible giving people the confidence that they are meeting all COVID-19 entry requirements by governments. As borders reopen, IATA Travel Pass will be further enhanced with more capabilities to meet all government’s testing or vaccination verification requirements”.
IATA will collect reports from these two airlines and Singapore Airlines which started the trail of Travel Pass back on 23 December. Once IATA gets the feedback, it will work on the crucial information gathered from the users and make it much better.
