The ROG Phone 5, ROG Phone 5 Pro, and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate, the new and most powerful incarnation of the world’s advanced gaming smartphone, have been announced by ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG).
The ROG Phone 5 is the successor to the ROG Phone 3, which was released in 2020. In their ROG series, Asus has skipped number four. We’re not too sure about it, but other OEMs, including Oneplus, are still skipping number four. It’s that the Chinese word for “four” sounds eerily similar to the Chinese word for “death.” As a result, number four is considered unlucky in the East Asian market.
The ROG Phone 5 series has more hardware and software ability and adaptation than most large-screen smartphones. Asus has offered two USB-C ports on the portrait and landscape mode to make it convenient for charging while entertaining with the game. With the purchase of a higher model (expect ROG Phone 5), a fan cooler is included in the box to protect the handset from overheating, which includes USB-C passthrough charging, a 3.5mm headphone port, and two remappable trigger buttons.
ROG Phone 5 Series: In Deep
If you’re looking for a smartphone that’s specifically designed for gaming, the ROG Phone 5 Series is the best option, at least for Q2,2021. The smartphone is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, the newest and most advanced SoC in the industry. With its massive 6000mAh battery, silky smooth 144Hz refresh rate screen, crystal clear audio, ultrasonic sensor all around the screen, and other gaming-centric features, this smartphone quickly becomes the most powerful handset available on the market.
The ROG Phone 5 Ultimate, as previously mentioned, is the highest variant in the entire series. It has 18GB of RAM, which is a lot, but we don’t think it’ll be of many benefits in reality. The entire variants in the Phone 5 series have an industry-leading 300 Hz touch sampling rate and a very low 24.3 ms touch latency and a 144 Hz/1 ms AMOLED HDR10+ certified display. The ROG Phone 5 series offers a total of ten separate motion controls, allowing gamers to choose the moves that best fit their playing.
Hidden rear touch sensors on the back of the ROG Phone 5 Pro and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate have L2/R2 button controls, similar to a game console controller. They all work in combination with the ultrasonic sensors, AeroActive Cooler 5 buttons, and gesture controls to allow you maximum control over your gaming experience. The new AeroActive Cooler 5 guides air directly into the core of the CPU, reducing the temperature within the housing by 10°C.
Available exclusively at ROG Phone 5 Pro and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate, these models have a rear matrix display that displays adaptable animations for various systems and in-game activities. The battery is divided into two halves, with the CPU in the middle, and the GameCool 5 cooling system in the ROG Phone 5 series now has the optimum thermal configuration to allow for maximum long-term performance. This means that the heat generated by the CPU is concurrently distributed to all chassis edges and corners for greater thermal effectiveness.
Asus included “ROG Vision” with the latest Ultimate and Pro variants, which is a rear-facing OLED screen similar to the Zephyrus G14 gaming laptop that displays personalized text or graphics on the rear panel.
The main camera on ROG Phone 5, Phone 5 Pro, and Phone 5 Ultimate models is a 64MP 1/1.7-inch, Sony IMX686 sensor. The primary lens, which has an f/1.8 aperture, can record 8K UHD (7680 x 4320) video at 30 frames per second. The main sensor is paired with a 13 MP Ultra-wide lens with f/2.4 aperture which can capture details with 125-degree Field of View (FOV), as well as a 5 MP Macro lens with f/2.0 aperture.
The camera is the only department that has remained unchanged despite all of the hardware and software upgrades. We’re saying this because the Asus ROG Phone 3 has the same camera setup, and with the increased price and series number, we’re hoping for some camera upgrades as well.
The pictures are good and usable, but Asus doesn’t seem pretty interested in enhancing either the image processing or the camera sensor of the unit. All we can guarantee is that the picture you’ll get will be of decent quality.
Aside from the 18GB of RAM and SD 888 chipset, the unit also features 65W of HyperCharge, and the adapter is included in the box. It ships with ROG UI on top of Android 11 out of the box. New software optimizations and power-saving mechanisms, such as a charging upper limit, steady charging, and improved scheduled charging, have been introduced in the ROG Phone 5 series. Passive power-saving mechanisms are also available to limit inactive apps and save up to 67 percent more power.
The ROG Phone 5 series’ GameFX audio system features symmetrical seven-magnet dual speakers for fully integrated stereo sound effects. It also features a 3.5mm headphone port, which was previously absent from the ROG Phone 3. The AudioWizard audio-tuning application has now been entirely redesigned to customize the sound for various audio genres, such as games, cinema, and music.
